Introduction

C

ongratulations, you now have the latest in mail equipment technology. The Barcode Tagger 720 is the newest entry in the long line of Barcode Taggers by Whitter Mailing Products. Now with Network Sharing capabilities built into each and every one of the Barcode Tagger 720 Systems, you have the ease of "drag and drop" job tag file transfers to your Barcode Tagger 720 System or at a moments notice you can print tags in On-demand basis. You control the use of this powerful tool.

As with all Tagger computers, the Barcode Tagger 720 is built around the rugged Tagger Engine.

The Barcode Tagger 720 has an all-new and simplified menu system which has been designed to make the System even easier to use.

Using a 3-Digit or 5-Digit ZIP Code as input, the Barcode Tagger references the most recently published labeling lists from the United States Postal Service to look up the correct destination line and Content Identifier Number (CIN) for any class and category of domestic mail for any valid ZIP code in the United States. This data, along with the barcode and other information, is formatted for the correct text size, graphic image position, etc. as specified by the USPS Domestic Mail Manual (DMM) and Postal Bulletins. This includes information on all tray, sack, and ACT tag formats defined in the DMM. Note that the most recent Postal Bulletin which is included in your Barcode Tagger can be viewed by pressing the [HELP] key while in the Main Menu of any of the Barcode Tagger 720's operating modes. Printer output on WMP tag stock is produced to exact DMM specifications.

Features of Tagger 720

Throughout this guide, reference to specific keys on the Barcode Tagger 720 keypad will be bolded and enclosed in brackets ([ ]). Example: [PREV] refers to the key labeled 'PREV'. Menu names will be in Italics. Example: Main Menu

Shutting Down: The Barcode Tagger 720 needs to be shut down properly, as with any computer device. It is best to return to the Main Menu , press [7] Shut Down System. And follow the on screen instructions (which ask that you give the system five (5) seconds to save settings, prior to turning the system off.)

arefully remove all items from the shipping carton. Save the rigid packing foams and outside shipping carton. If your Barcode Tagger 720 ever requires service, you will be asked to ship the unit to Whittier Mailing Products in the original packaging. Inspect the contents of the box. If any items are missing or damaged, notify Whittier Mailing Products at once. Call at (562) 464-3000 or FAX to (562) 464-3007.

Barcode Tagger 720 Packing List: 1 Barcode Tagger 720 control unit, 1 AC power adapter and cord and 1 Barcode Tagger 720 User Guide

Installing The Cables

  1. Remove the Barcode Tagger 720 control unit and AC power cord from box.
  2. The power supply is a 5-volt wall mount AC adapter and cord with a single pin connector. Insert the power connector into the round socket on the back of the Barcode Tagger 720.
  3. Plug the AC power cord into a grounded AC power socket. Although the computer and the printer each have their own power switches, it is preferable to use a power strip with its own power switch so that both elements can be turned on and off simultaneously.
  4. Attach the serial data link cable from the printer to the 9-pin serial connector on the back of the computer marked "COM1", locking it down with the two finger screws.

Installing The Printer

Refer to the User Guide included with the printer for installation details.
Before using the Barcode Tagger 720, please check the following:

The data cable has a male 9-pin connector (with pins) on one end and a female 9-pin connector (with holes) on the other end. See ILLUSTRATION A. Plug the male connector into the matching socket on the back of the printer and secure the plug with the two finger screws on the plug. The female connector should be attached to the Barcode Tagger 720

Using The BT-720 Barcode Tagger On A Windows Network

This chapter explains how to use your Tagger with your network.

T

here are three ways a Tagger BT-720 can communicate over a TCP/IP network: using File Transfer Protocol (FTP), accessing a “shared folder” on a network workstation and offering an internal directory as a “shared folder” to a network.

All three methods require minimal setup on the BT-720. First the BT-720 must have a Static IP Address assigned to it and a Gateway IP Address specified. If you do not know the Static IP Address the BT-720 will use, ask your system administrator.

Setting The Static IP Address and Gateway IP Address

The BT-720 will use a Static IP Address you give it to identify its self when communicating over a network. From the main menu, press [4], System Settings. Next press [6] to go to Network Settings from the System Functions menu. Now go to the [4] TCP/IP Settings Menu. Your screen will look like this:

Choose [1] Tagger Static IP then enter the Static IP Address you want the Tagger to use (for example, 192.168.1.86). Use the - key to enter a ".". After you have finished entering the Static IP Address press the [ENTER] key to finalize the entry.

Now set your [2] Network Gateway IP address and [3] Subnet Mask the same way.

After you have set the Tagger Static IP, Network Gateway IP, and Subnet Mask, press [5] Apply Settings to have the settings take effect. A screen will come up telling you what the tagger is doing. When it is done, you will be returned to the TCP/IP Settings menu and you can press [PREV] Network Settings to return to the Network Settings menu.

Configuring The Tagger For Wireless Networking

After you have set your IP address, Network Gateway, and Subnet Mask, you can configure your Tagger for wireless networking.

First you will need to contact Whittier Mailing Products to obtain a WMP USB wireless adapter. Your BT720 is not designed to work with any other wireless adapter.

Once you have your WMP USB wireless adapter, extend the antenna and plug it into the USB port on the back of the BT720.

You will also have to contact your Network Administrator to obtain a wireless SSID and Key.

Now, you will need to go to the TCP/IP Settings menu (from the Main Menu, [5] System Settings - [6] Network Settings - [5] TCP/IP Settings.) Press [5] Wireless Settings. You should now see a screen that looks something like this:

Wireless Settings HELP

1) SSID

2) Key ()

PREV) TCP/IP Settings

NEW) Main Menu

Press [1] SSID and enter the SSID your network administrator assigned to you. It should be a combination of letters and numbers. Enter the Key the same way.

Once you have entered the SSID and Key, return to the TCP/IP Settings menu by pressing [PREV]. Now press [4] Connection to switch between wired and wireless. It should say wireless next to connection. Finally press [7] Apply Settings to save your settings and get the tagger set up to network.

Configuring The Tagger For FTP Communications

The BT-720 Barcode Tagger has the capability of sending and retrieving files to/from an FTP Server. The Tagger must be configured with the FTP Server IP address, a login User ID and login User Password. These settings can be entered in the FTP Settings menu (Main Menu – [5] System Settings – [6] Network Settings – [1] FTP Settings). You will be taken to a menu that looks like this:

Enter the IP address of the computer hosting the FTP server, an FTP User ID and FTP User Password (the User ID and Password must be in capital letters).

For more information on how to set up the Windows workstation as an FTP server for the Tagger, please see Appendix C1.

Configuring The Tagger To Access Files On A Workstation's Shared Folder

The BT-720 Barcode Tagger is able to download and upload files to/from a workstation’s shared folders. Prior to this, the Tagger must be configured with information describing what computer is offering the shared folder and the name of the share. In addition the BT-720 must be given a User ID and User Password to access the shared folder and files on the Workstation. These setting can be made in the Windows Share Settings menu (Main Menu - [5] System Settings - [6] Network Settings - [2] Windows Share Settings).

Once in the Windows Share Settings menu, enter the IP Address of the computer with the shared network folders as well as a name of a shared folder. Enter a User ID and Password that have been granted access rights to the shared folder on the workstation (the User ID and Password must be in capital letters).

For more information on setting up your Windows workstation to share a folder with the Tagger, please see Appendix C2.

Configuring The Tagger To Share Its Own Folders

The BT-720 Barcode Tagger can offer a shared folder to users on a network. The user can "map" the BT-720's shared folder in his workstation's file browser (Windows Explorer) and access the Tagger's files as if they were on his local hard drive.

To enable this feature you must enter the sharing information in the Tagger's File Server Settings menu (Main Menu - [5] System Settings - [6] Network Settings - [3] File Server Settings). The shared folder name, visible to other workstations on the network, will be of the form "\\BT720-xxxx\Data\" where 'xxxx' is the last 4 digits of the BT-720’s serial number. For example: the shared folder name for the BT-720 Tagger with a serial number "03B78C1001" would be "\\BT720-1001\Data\".

The Tagger must be given a User Name and Password to verify access permissions for network users. These can be entered in the File Server Settings menu. A network user must enter the User Name and Password when accessing the BT-720's shared folder. These settings only need to be entered the first time a user connects to the BT-720. For various technical reasons, we do not recommend using this method to share files for customers using the wireless networking option.

For more information on how to map a network drive from the Tagger to your Windows workstation, please see Appendix C3.

To view a different ZIP Code area, enter the 3 Digits in the "ZIP to View" field and press [ENTER]. Above, in the "Zip assigned to:" field, the three-letter abbreviation for the current, active airport appears. The viewable section of the ACT table changes to coincide with the ZIP Code you entered. An assignment of XXX in the Airport field means that that ZIP Code is not currently assigned to any airport.

Switching between View and Assign mode: the bottom left corner tells you which mode you are in. In View mode it says, "ZIP to View". In Assign mode it says "Zip to ASSIGN". Press the hyphen option [-] to switch between View and Assign mode.

To Change An Entry In The ACT Table

  1. Set the "Airport" field to the airport to which you will be assigning ZIP Codes. There are two ways to set the "Airport" field:
    1. If the airport already appears in the table, it can be placed into the "Airport" field by entering one of the ZIP Codes assigned to it at the "Zip to view" prompt.
    2. To set a new airport from the Airport Edit screen:
  2. Press [NEXT] to select the Edit Airport option. You will then see the Airport Edit screen, as shown below, with the current airport shown in the middle of the screen.

Appendix A

Tagger Job File Programming Format

Tagger Job File (TJF) Overview

TJF files are created either by a host computer or by the Barcode Tagger 720 and stored on IBM formatted 3 ½-inch floppy diskettes. The files can be loaded into the Tagger 720 at a later date for tag printing, either as a batch or one-at-a-time. When the tags are printed on an “as needed” basis, the operator can add or delete tags while a job is being processed.

Command Format and Syntax

TJF files are ASCII text files. They may be created by methods as simple as a simple text editor, or they can be created by custom programming. The Barcode Tagger 720 interprets each line of the file terminated with a CR/LF as a command.

TJF files may contain comments preceded with a pound (#) sign. Improperly formatted commands are ignored. Improper or impossible tag requests cause the printing of an error message tag (not usable as an USPS tag) stating the error detected.

Examples of TJF files are included in this section.

Tip: If you have trouble debugging TJF files, create a new job using the Barcode Tagger 720 keypad as a sample. Save it, export it to diskette, and examine it using a text editor on your PC.

TJF File Sections

TJF files have three sections. Each section is terminated by a line containing one or more equal signs (=). The first section identifies the file as a job file and the name of the job. The first line is the format identifier, which currently should read “WMP Tagger Job File Format July2002” terminated by a CR/LF. The second line contains the name of the job file. The name may be as long as 40 characters and is terminated by a CR/LF. The third line consists of one or more equal signs terminated by a CR/LF, and this ends the first section.

The second section pre-programs the Barcode Tagger 720 for the type of job to be printed. Seven parameters must be set in this section. Each parameter must be set on a separate line terminated by a CR/LF. The exact order of the parameters is not important. Each parameter is set by a command line formatted as follows: parameter = setting CR/LF. The number of spaces between the parameter, equal sign and setting are not important.

Please note: The format identifier, the elements of the second section, and what codes are valid in the third section, will change from time to time as the USPS changes mail categories. See the above Tip (middle of page) in the box for creating a sample of the latest format.

The following parameters must be set in the second section of the TJF:

Format =

Tray w/Extra 39

Tray w/Extra Text

Sack Fill In

Tag Printer =

No

Act Printer =

Mailer Code =

(1 to 10 digits)

Ignored if Origin not <Standard>

Category = @#### (one alpha character class code, two-digit process category, two digit sortation code. (See Appendix B)

The second section is terminated by one or more equal signs terminated with a CR/LF.

The third section of the TJF file is the Tag section. This is where the individual tags are requested. This section is currently limited to 1000 entries. Each line contains 3 or 4 fields delimited by a comma. The format of each line is: Subtype, ZIP, Quantity, optional tray data text. Spaces are ignored.

Subtype Three-digit subtype code. The first digit is the length of ZIP (0,3,5 or 9). See Appendix B
ZIP The number of digits of ZIP that will be looked at is based on the first digit of subtype. When ZIP length is 0, no lookup is required. ZIP length of 3 looks up a three-digit ZIP. 5 is a five-digit ZIP, and 9 is a five-digit ZIP code plus a route type (C for carrier route, R for rural route, etc), and a three-digit route number. Route numbers may be padded with leading zeros.
Quantity Number of tags to be printed, up to 999.
Optional Tray Data Text Literal text to be printed.
